Abortion

As I mentioned in my last post I want to follow up on the content of the protest at the University of Calgary. Abortion is a grim business. Every time someone has an abortion a person dies. People like to obscure this fact whenever they argue in favour of abortion. They like to talk about back alley abortions or suffering single moms but invariably they shy away from discussing the humanity of the unborn child, which is actually the crux of this debate. If a fetus is a human being then it should not be killed, if it's not then abortion is non-issue.

The demonstration at UofC is an ingenious way of forcing people's mind back to this central issue. Looking at the carnage of abortion makes it's difficult to argue with common rhetoric.

The genocide awareness project signs used by the UofC pro-life club compares the genocide of abortion with previous genocide such as the holocaust. This is a provocative approach and does incite anger but it also loudly proclaims the evil of abortion as bluntly as possible. People are forced to argue the validity of the claim rather than argue with smoke screen issues.

In the past I've been involved in these similar demonstrations at the University of BC. I can personally attest to the fact that these demonstrations are effective in changing peoples' minds. I had many good conversations with people that saw the point that the signs were making.

I suspect that these demonstrations are most effective with people that are somewhat emotionally distant from the issue. Unfortunately, people that have previously had abortions or have had family or friends that have had abortions are far more likely to simply close their minds to logic. I honestly don't see how any other form of demonstration would be different. The reality is that abortion is genocide and we need to make anybody that is willing to listen aware of this if we are ever going to see our society change. I am convinced that these types of demonstrations are the most effective way of doing so.
